How WhatsApp Fonts Works
WhatsApp supports a handful of its own formatting shortcuts (surrounding text with *asterisks* or _underscores_), but that only works inside a WhatsApp chat and only covers bold and italic. Unicode-styled text isn't limited to WhatsApp's shortcut list or to chat messages — the same styled text works in your status, your contact name, and your group name too.
Because it's plain Unicode rather than a WhatsApp-specific shortcut, styled text also renders identically whether someone's using WhatsApp on Android, iPhone, or WhatsApp Web on a desktop browser — useful for a group name or status that needs to look the same for everyone in the chat, regardless of device.
A small number of rare or newer Unicode symbols may not have a matching glyph on older phones, showing up as a blank box instead of the intended character. Sticking to the more common styles (bold, italic, cursive, fancy) is the safest choice for a group name or status that a wide mix of devices will need to display correctly.
