How Strikethrough Text Works

Strikethrough uses a Unicode combining character (U+0336, "combining long stroke overlay") placed after every letter. Combining marks attach to whichever character comes before them, which is why the line stretches across your whole word even though nothing was actually formatted — it is just an extra character stacked on each letter.

It's a common choice for the "crossed-out price, new price" marketing pattern (e.g. ~~$40~~ $25), for a joke or self-correcting aside in a caption, or for a mock-edited look where crossing something out is the point rather than deleting it. Since it's plain text, it works the same way in a caption, a comment, or a product listing title.

Because each letter carries its own extra combining-mark character, strikethrough text is technically longer, character-for-character, than the plain text you typed — worth a quick glance if you're right up against a strict character limit somewhere. It can also read a little differently to screen readers, which may announce the combining mark separately; keep that in mind for text that needs to stay fully accessible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each character gets a combining "strikethrough" mark (U+0336) attached to it. Because the mark travels with the character as a single unit of text, the line appears anywhere the text is pasted — no rich-text formatting required.

Yes. Since it uses combining Unicode characters rather than app-specific formatting, strikethrough text generated here displays correctly in Discord, WhatsApp, Instagram, and most other apps.
