How Underline Text Works
Like strikethrough, underline styles work through Unicode combining marks — U+0332 ("combining low line") for a single underline, or two stacked combining marks for a double underline. Each mark rides underneath the character before it, so the line is part of the text itself rather than a formatting effect applied on top.
Underlined text is a useful way to give a heading-like emphasis to a word or short phrase in a plain-text field that has no formatting tools at all — a section label in a long caption, a key term in a Discord message, or a faux-link look for a call to action. Double underline pushes that emphasis further for a single standout word.
Because a double underline stacks two combining marks on each character, a small number of fonts render the two lines slightly closer together than a true double rule would look in a word processor — it's a Unicode approximation of the effect rather than pixel-perfect typography, though it displays consistently across all modern devices and apps.
