How Twitter Fonts Works

X (formerly Twitter) has never offered built-in text formatting — there's no bold, italic, or underline button anywhere in the app. Styled Unicode text is the only way to add visual emphasis to a post, bio, or display name, and because it's just text, it posts, retweets, and searches exactly like normal characters.

Back when the platform enforced a strict 140-character limit, a styled display name or a bolded opening line in a bio was one of the few ways to stand out in a crowded timeline — that habit has carried over even with the higher character limit today, and it's still a common way to make a profile or a pinned post visually distinct at a glance.

A stylized display name is one of the simplest, lowest-effort parts of a profile refresh — unlike a bio rewrite or a new profile photo, changing your name's font takes seconds and doesn't require re-approval or losing your handle, since your actual @username field (unlike your display name) doesn't accept these styles.
