How Unicode Fonts Work
Every style on this page is made of real Unicode characters, not an image, a web font, or a CSS effect. Unicode is the character-encoding standard that every modern device, operating system, and app agrees on — it's the reason an emoji you send from an iPhone shows up correctly on an Android phone, and it's the same standard that makes styled text portable.
Alongside the plain A–Z letters you type on a keyboard, Unicode also defines entire blocks of alternate-styled letters for other purposes — the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, for instance, exists so mathematicians can write bold or italic variables in plain text, and it happens to contain a complete bold, italic, script, and fraktur alphabet.
